Science first

Everything this initiative does rests on fieldwork and evidence. Under the BioConnect project, ACE and its partners are building the scientific base that effective protection of the Shouf–Jezzine geosites requires.

Current research strands

• Bat research. Surveys of bat species across Jezzine and the Shouf Biosphere Reserve — at least eight species have been recorded at the El Qaleh geosite alone, making bats a flagship group for the area’s conservation value.

• Geosite biodiversity assessment. Systematic study of the geosites and their associated biodiversity, documenting the species and habitats each site sustains.

• Spatial analysis and 3D modelling. Mapping and modelling of ecologically significant areas to understand landscape connectivity and guide management decisions.

• Legal and governance frameworks. Developing the legal framework for protecting a biodiversity-rich trail, and strengthening the management and governance of sites of ecological importance.
