A record of deep time

The rocks of the Jezzine region preserve traces of ancient life — a paleontological heritage that gives these mountains scientific significance far beyond their beauty. It’s no accident that the geopark’s emblem carries an insect preserved in amber: fossil-bearing formations are one of the defining features of this landscape, and one of the strongest scientific arguments for its protection.

The fossil inventory

As part of its GeoEducation program, ACE is carrying out an identification and inventory of the fossils of the Jezzine region — building the systematic, documented record that both science and site protection depend on.

Highlights from the inventory will be published here as the work is reviewed and confirmed.

Why it matters

Fossils are a non-renewable archive: once a site is quarried or built over, its record is gone forever. Documenting what the region holds is the first step in protecting it — and in sharing it, through education and geotourism, with the communities who live on top of this extraordinary heritage.
